To further our city's commitment to the relationship with our Japanese friends and in honor of their culture, we have a series of events that celebrate the Cherry Trees and The Sakura.
A Cherry Blossom is the flower of the cherry trees known as Sakura (桜 or 櫻, さくら). In 2009, The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival Committee committed to plant 1,000 cherry trees by planting 100 trees every spring over 10 years. These cherry trees will not only beautify Nashville's landscape, but also provide a backdrop of the annual Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival.
Cherry Blossom, or sakura, have been the symbol of U.S.-Japan friendship since the Mayor of Tokyo donated 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, D.C. in 1912.
